Denying Israel's Right to Exist and Anticipating its Destruction
Written and Compiled by Itamar Marcus
(Except where indicated)

Palestinian Media Watch research has long demonstrated a clear and unified world-view within the Palestinian leadership, in its speeches to the nation, in educational programs, and through school textbooks published by the Palestinian Authority.

Israel is consistently defined as a colony that stole the land of Palestine, having no right to exist. Therefore, within the framework of justice, there is no room for Israel's permanent existence.

The Arabic Palestinian lexicon contains many expressions to describe the negotiations with Israel in this context: The permanent agreement is a stage; The Oslo accords are to gain a foothold; All the agreements are temporary.

In this context the Oslo process is part of the process of liberating Palestine. The recurrent justification given for the need for a temporary agreement with Israel is because of the current balance of power.

From the positions expressed within the Palestinian Authority it is evident that Israeli Arab MK Dahamshe's position, stated on PA TV, that the "permanent" status agreement with Israel is to be viewed as hudna, a temporary tactical truce, is the rule and not the exception.

The following are examples of PA leaders stating this explicitly

(Complete bulletins in this theme here)

Ibrahim Mudayris, Head of the Association for Memorizing the Quran, PA Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs - We have not given up on Haifa, Jaffa, Lod and Tel Aviv

"We might return to the 1967 borders by diplomacy, but we won't return to the 1948 borders by diplomacy. The 1948 borders - no one on earth recognizes as ours. Therefore, we shall return to the 1967 borders, but we have not given up on Jerusalem and Haifa, Jaffa, Lod, Ramle, Netanya and Tel Aviv. Never...!

"[Your fathers' blood] shall curse anyone who will concede a grain of earth of those villages. The land of Palestine will demand that the Palestinians return as Muhammad returned - as conquerors."
[Ibrahim Mudayris, PA TV, February 4, 2005]

Faisal Husseini, Palestinian Authority Representative for Jerusalem Affairs - Oslo accords are a Trojan Horse

"Had the US and Israel realized, before Oslo, that all that was left of the Palestinian National movement and the Pan-Arab movement was a wooden horse called Arafat or the PLO, they would never have opened their fortified gates and let it inside their walls...

"This effort [the Intifada] could have been much better, broader, and more significant had we made it clearer to ourselves that the Oslo agreement, or any other agreement, is just a temporary procedure, or just a step towards something bigger... We distinguish the strategic, long-term goals from the political phased goals, which we are compelled to temporarily accept due to international pressure... [Palestine], according to the higher strategy [is] 'from the river to the sea.' Palestine in its entirety is an Arab land, the land of the Arab nation."
[Al-Arabia (Egypt), June 24, 2001]

Abd Al-Aziz Shahian, then-Palestinian Authority Minister of Supplies - Oslo is just the first step in the destruction of Israel

"The Palestinian people accepted the Oslo agreements as a first step and not as a permanent settlement, based on the premise that the war and struggle in the land is more efficient than a struggle from a distant land [i.e. Tunisia, where the PLO was based before Oslo - Ed.]... The Palestinian people will continue the revolution until they achieve the goals of the '65 revolution..."
[PA Minister of Supplies Abd Al-Aziz Shahian, Al-Ayyam, May 30, 2000]

[The "'65 Revolution" is the founding of the PLO and the publication of the Palestinian charter that calls for the destruction of Israel via an armed struggle.]

Othman Abu Arbiah, Arafat's Deputy - The Palestinian state is just the first stage

"... At this stage we'll prevail in our struggle [toward] the goals of the Stages [Plan]. The goal of this stage is the establishment of the independent Palestinian State, with its capital in Jerusalem. When we achieve this, it will be a positive [step] and it will advance us to the next stage via other ways and means...

"Every Palestinian must know clearly and unequivocally that the independent Palestinian State, with Jerusalem as its capital, is not the end of the road. The [rise of] the Palestinian State is a stage, after which there will be another stage and that is the democratic state in all of Palestine [i.e. in place of Israel]."
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, November 25, 1999]

[Othman Abu Arbiah is Arafat's aide for Political Guidance and national affairs, and the Director-General for National Affairs, a senior position in the Palestinian national educational structure]

Sheikh Yousuf Abu Sneina, Imam of Al-Aqsa Mosque - All of Israel is Palestine forever

"The Islamic land of Palestine is one and cannot be divided.

"There is no difference between Haifa and Nablus, between Lod and Ramallah, between Jerusalem and Nazareth, between Gaza and Ashkelon.

"The land of Palestine is Waqf land that belongs to Muslims throughout the world and no one has the right to act freely or the right to make concessions or to abandon her. Whoever does this betrays a [trust] and is nothing more than a loathsome criminal whose abode is in Hell."
[Sheikh Yousuf Abu Sneina, PA TV, September 8, 2000]

Abdullah Al-Hourani, Chairman of the Palestinian National Council Political Committee - "The conflict remains eternal" - all of Israel is Palestine

Interviewer: "How do [you] read the future of the peace process...?"

Al-Hourani: "Whether they return to negotiations or not, and whether they fulfill the agreements or not - the political plan is a temporary agreement, and the conflict remains eternal, will not be locked, and the agreements being talked about are regarding the current balance of power. As to the struggle, it will continue. It may pause at times, but in the final analysis, Palestine is ours from the [Mediterranean] Sea to the [Jordan] River."
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, April 14, 2000]

Ahmad Nasser, Secretary of Palestinian Legislative Council, PA TV, February 6, 2004 - Israel is a satanic state that cannot exist like normal states

"Israel was established on the basis of theft. The State of Israel is Satan's offspring - a satanic offspring. It was founded on theft from the first moment. It was founded on the basis of robbery, terror, killing, torture, assassination, death, stealing land and killing people and will continue this way, never able to exist because its birth was unnatural, a satanic offspring, and cannot exist among human beings...

"It cannot exist naturally, like other nations in this world...

"This state is based on racism, Biblical concepts, death, killing and destruction...

"Israel is an aggressive country, a racist country, an ideologically hostile country, which hates all the 'Goyim,' all the foreigners. Israel is a satanic offspring."
[Ahmad Nasser, PA TV, February 6, 2004]

Imad Al-Falugi, Palestinian Authority Minister of Communication:- The "Occupation State" will cease to exist

"Our people have hope for the future, that the Occupation State ceases to exist, and that it makes no difference [how great] its power and arrogance..."
[Imad Al-Falugi, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, November 18, 1999]

Salim Alo'adia, Abu Salam, Supervisor of Political Affairs - The goal has not changed - "the liberation of Palestine"

"When we picked up the gun in '65 and the modern Palestinian Revolution began, it had a goal. This goal has not changed and it is the liberation of Palestine."
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, January 20, 2000]

Sheikh Ikrime Sabri, Palestinian Authority-appointed Mufti of Jerusalem & Palestine - We have not forgotten about Jaffa or about Acre

"We are discussing the current problems and when we speak about Jerusalem, it doesn't mean that we have forgotten about Hebron or about Jaffa or about Acre. We are speaking about the current problems that have priority at a certain time. It doesn't mean that we have given up... We have announced a number of times that from a religious point of view, Palestine from the sea to the river is Islamic."
[PA TV, January 11, 2001.]

Note: Jaffa and Acre are Israeli cities. The “sea to the river” is all of Israel.]

Dr. Ahmed Yousuf Abu Halabiya, Member of the Palestinian Sharianic (Islamic religious law) Rulings Council, and Rector of Advanced Studies, Islamic University - All the agreements are temporary

"We, the nation of Palestine, our fate from Allah is to be the vanguard in the war against the Jews until the resurrection of the dead, as the Prophet Muhammad said, 'The resurrection of the dead will not come until you do battle with the Jews and kill them.' We the Palestinians, are the vanguard in this issue, in this battle, whether we want to or whether we refuse. All the agreements being made are temporary..."
[Dr. Ahmed Yousuf Abu Halabiya, PA TV, July 28, 2000]

Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Ma'di, a Palestinian Authority religious leader - We will enter Jaffa, Ramle and Lod and all of Palestine, as conquerors

"We are positive that Allah will help us triumph. Our belief is firm that one day we will enter Jerusalem as conquerors, enter Jaffa as conquerors, Ramle and Lod ... and all of Palestine, as conquerors...

[Jaffa, Ramle, and Lod are Israeli cities - Ed.]

"If He [Allah] asks them [Arab leaders], on Judgment Day, 'the majority of Palestine was lost in '48 and what did you do? And the remainder was lost in '67, and now it is being vanquished again.' How shall we respond to our Lord...?

"Palestine shall be the burial grounds of the invaders just as it was for the Tartars, and the Crusaders and for modern colonialism... The Tradition relates to us that Allah's cherished one [Muhammad] said, 'The Jews will battle against you but you shall emerge masters over them.'"
[Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Ma'di, PA TV, April 12, 2002]

Dr. Ibrahim Mudayris - Only interested in destroying Israel

"[Sharon said] 'No to the return to the '67 borders.' I will not add my voice to Sharon's voice, but raise it above his voice and tell him: No to the return to the '67 borders. We are interested in returning to our genuine borders. We want to return to the 1948 [pre-Israel] borders... We want to return to these borders, and we will yet return to them, by Allah, even if it will take time. We are interested in returning to the 1936 borders, to the revolution... and we are interested in returning to 1929 borders... [a time when] a group of our grandfather and fathers became shahids for Allah in the Al-Buraq Revolution, as they were defending the Al-Aqsa mosque from the Hagana gangs, Allah curse them and curse those who supported them. We want to return to 1919 borders... [We have a claim] which we can't forget and will never forgive forever... [against] Britain and all governments who assisted that state [Israel] to be established on this land, which is a false state on a true land..."
[Dr. Ibrahim Mudayris, PA TV, December 31, 2004]

Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Ma'di - "We will blow them up in Hadera, we will blow them up in Tel-Aviv"

"We will blow them up in Hadera, we will blow them up in Tel-Aviv and in Netanya... We will fight against them and rule over them until the Jew will hide behind the trees and stones and the tree and stone will say: 'O Muslim! O servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him...

"We will enter Jerusalem as conquerors, and Jaffa as conquerors, and Haifa as conquerors and Ashkelon as conquerors..."
[Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Ma'di, PA TV, August 3, 2001]

Dr. Ahmed Yousuf Abu Halabiya - "We will not forget Haifa, Acre, Jaffa, the Galilee Triangle, and the Negev"

"Even if agreements were signed [regarding] Gaza and the West Bank, we will not forget Haifa, Acre, Jaffa, the Galilee Triangle, and the Negev. It is only a question of time..."
[Dr. Ahmed Yousuf Abu Halabiya, PA TV, October 13, 2000]

[All the places mentioned are Israeli cities or regions - Ed.]

Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Ma'di - "Palestine shall return to its former days ... Israel shall pass"

"Who is responsible for the loss of Palestine, the good land that the passages of the dear Koran bless many times, and [for] deceitfully labeling it Israel? Who is responsible for the loss of Jerusalem...? The Prophet [Muhammad] soothes us with many Hadiths that Palestine shall return to its former days... We must prepare a foothold, for the coming army of Allah, by divine predetermination. May it be Allah's will, this oppressive state shall pass, Israel shall pass..."
[Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Ma'di, PA TV, June 8, 2001]

PA society: Destruction of Israel
is desired and attainable goal
By Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook, September 14, 2005

Destroying Israel continues to be a desired and attainable goal candidly presented in Palestinian Authority discourse and education. The intensity of this hate message has increased on Palestinian Authority Television (PA TV) since Israel left Gush Katif in Gaza, as religious, political and educational leaders have encouraged Palestinians to perceive the events there as a first step towards Israel's destruction.

Three PA TV programs stressed this goal last week. The first, a rebroadcast of a so-called "historical educational" program first aired in 2003, reiterated the PA teaching that Israel has no right to exist because all of Israel is "Palestine." Worse, it taught that Israel's continued existence is, by its very nature, a threat to the entire Arab world.

The PA TV broadcast showed a map of all of Israel marked as Palestine under the PLO flag, while the narrator taught that if Palestine is not "whole," meaning if Israel continues to exist, it is like a fatal knife thrust into the heart of the Arab nation, which threatens it in its entirety. The following are the words:

Click here to view the video

"The countries of our [Arab] homeland also have a heart...

"If the heart is whole and healthy, then all the other parts are whole and healthy. The heart of the Arab homeland is Palestine. The homeland remains whole and healthy if Palestine is whole and healthy...

"A stab in the heart is a deathblow.

"Throughout the generations of history there were those who directed the first stab at the heart of the Arab nation, to Palestine."
[PA TV, September 6, 2005 and July 1, 2003]

A Palestinian academic expressed the same anticipation of Israel's eventual destruction, describing the joy of the Gaza withdrawal as incomplete until Israel will be destroyed:

"Nothing compares to this joy, the oppressed overcomes the oppressor. But our happiness will be complete only with the return of all of our lands - the [West] Bank, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Haifa, Safed, and other stolen cities".
[Dr. Ismaeil Al-Fara, lecturer at Al-Quds University, and director of the General Union for Disabled Palestinians in Khan Yunis, PA TV, September 2, 2005]

PMW has been warning for years about the dangers of this PA indoctrination to see Israel's existence as illegitimate and temporary, especially among children. The results of this education were seen again this week as three children showed off their drawings of maps of "Palestine" on PA TV. All three children erased Israel's existence in their drawings while the maps were tied in barbed wire symbolizing "Palestine" as ensnared by Israel.

These were some their explanations:

Click here to view the video

Mahmoud Eid: "In this painting I wanted to

emphasize the chains that the occupation puts on our people. I painted this map of Palestine, with the Palestinian flag to say to our people that Palestine is still Palestine, and that the Palestinians deserve it - not the Jews."

Udai: "I painted the map so we will not forget

our place on the map."

Significantly, the children call all of Israel "Palestine" and all of Israel is said to be "the Occupation." These conclusions are not surprising - they are the direct result of ten years of PA education. PA schoolbooks - even those published last year - replace Israel with "Palestine" on all maps. In addition, the word "occupation" in the school books refers to all of Israel. For example:

"Colonialism: Palestine faced the British occupation after the First World War in 1917, and the Israeli occupation in 1948..."
[National Education, sixth grade, p. 16, PA ministry of Education, 2000, translated by Center for Monitoring the Impact of Peace]

Palestinian Media Watch has reported on other examples of Palestinian children reflecting their education that Israel should be destroyed, thereby reflecting one of the central messages of their formal and informal education. One such example was a letter writing competition held by the PA Ministry of Education. The winner wrote of "returning" to Jaffa, a city in Israel. Read the bulletin here.

Palestinian Media Watch finds it significant that PA TV would choose to air these programs the day before Israel withdrew its troops from Gaza. These programs reinforce the messages the PA educational system has been delivering for years - and teach Palestinian children to see the peace process as temporary and Israel's destruction as attainable and inevitable.

PA Sermon: Extermination of Jews and Subjugation of Christians - the Inevitable Goal of History
By Itamar Marcus & Barbara Crook, May 16, 2005

Download this clip

The final stage of history will be the subjugation of all Christian countries under Islam and the extermination of every single Jew - this according to the PA religious leader during Friday’s Sermon. The Jews are so evil, Ibrahim Mudayris teaches, that they cannot be subjugated like the Christian countries, and therefore the only solution awaiting them is death – literally the extermination of every Jew. In his words: “The day will come and we shall rule America, Britain, we shall rule the entire world, except the Jews.”

In the sermon Ibrahim Mudayris reiterated many of the oft-repeated PA justifications for the anticipated genocide, including the following hate messages:

  1. The Jews have inherently evil character traits that Muhammad warned Muslims about in the Koran.
  2. The Jews have been the source of conflict throughout all of history; "The Jews are a virus similar to AIDS, from which the entire world is suffering."
  3. The persecution of Jews throughout history is presented as natural responses of self-defense by numerous countries against the evil of the Jews. Britain, France, Portugal, Czarist Russia, Nazi Germany, all persecuted and/or expelled Jews as acts of self-defense and revenge.
  4. Zionism was created by Britain in order solve its Jewish problem by sending them to Israel.
  5. God has predetermined that the Jewish problem will be solved with the extermination of the Jews.
  6. God has predetermined that the Christian-Muslim interactions will end with today's Christian countries under Islam.
  7. Israel has no right to exist and will be destroyed.

Koran: "Indeed you will find that of all mankind, those with the strongest hatred of the

believers are the Jews and the pagans" [Al-Maada (The Table), 82]

Ibrahim Mudayris, Official Friday Sermon

"There is no god but Allah, Who warned His Prophet [Muhammad] of the Jews; who murdered their prophets, and falsified their Bible; who were corrupt and corrupted throughout their existence; [and] violated their treaties and agreements. Hundreds of verses about them came down [from the heavens] and appeared in the Koran. And in them it is told of the corruption of their qualities and their evil intentions...

"Had Allah not protected the Beloved [i.e. Muhammad], he would have been a victim of the Jews' treachery, he would have been one of the thousands of prophets who were murdered by the Jews...

"This [May 15, the day the PA mourns Israel's Independence] is the hardest day of remembrance for the Palestinian people ... because with the loss of Palestine, the Arab nation was lost, and with the establishment of the false State of Israel, the whole Muslim nation was lost.

"With the establishment of the State of Israel, the entire Islamic nation was lost because Israel is a cancer spreading in the body of the Islamic nation; because the Jews are a virus similar to AIDS, from which the entire world is suffering.
"This has been proven in history. Read the history! I don't want you to read the Koran, because the Koran is clear and permanent and we all believe it, but for those who do not believe the Koran, we say to them, read the history...

"You'll find the Jews behind every conflict on Earth. The suffering of nations - the Jews are behind it!

"Ask Britain! What did it do to the Jews at the beginning of the sixth century? What did they do to the Jews? They persecuted them, tortured them, and prevented them from entering for more than 300 years...

"Ask France! They tortured them, persecuted them and burned their Talmud, for the conflicts that they [i.e. Jews] tried to ignite in France in the period of Louis XIX.

"Ask Portugal what it did to the Jews! Ask Czarist Russia - who invited the Jews and they plotted to murder the Czar! And he massacred them repeatedly.

"Don't ask Germany what it did to the Jews, since the Jews are the ones who provoked Nazism to fight the entire world.

"On the day the Jews provoked - through the Zionist movement - the nations of the world to fight Germany economically, and to boycott German goods; on the day that they incited Russia, Britain, France and Italy, the anger of the Germans toward the Jews increased significantly, and what happened, happened at that time so that [Holocaust] Remembrance Day is commemorated by the Jews to this day.

"For they are doing something worse than was done to them in the Nazi war. Possibly some of them were killed, possibly some of them were burned, but they're exaggerating [the Holocaust] in order to win over world media, and world sympathy.

"The worst criminal acts in history were perpetrated upon the Jews, but they are not worse than those perpetrated upon the inhabitants of Palestine. What was done to the Jews is a crime, but isn't what they are doing in Palestine a crime...?

"The Jews did not have a national home on this earth because they are liars! They lie when claiming that part of their faith is the establishment of a national home in Palestine. They were never interested in and never considered the establishment of a national home in Palestine itself. They were interested in a national home in any place at all, any place at all... Britain is the one that promised them the establishment of a national home on the land of Palestine. Why? Because Britain was upset by the Jewish presence in Britain, and wanted to be relieved of them, so it promised to establish a national home in Palestine...

"The right [of the Jews] stems from their power, but our right - or our power - stems from our right. The rights of the Jews stem from their power, and power is transient...

"Know, O Muslims, that the Jews in their conferences, led by the cursed Herzl did not set Palestine as their goal for the establishment of a national home...

"Herzl admitted, and said, 'We could have accepted the establishment of a national home in Mozambique.' Mozambique, which Portugal wanted to give them - also to get rid of them...

"Liar - he who says that the Jews have any rights to this land, besides being occupiers. And they will disappear!...

"The Jews have the power of a balloon; it isn't real. Why? Because the Jews drew their power from the weakness of the Muslims - our weakness. They drew their power from our weakness... If we wished to measure power, then [we'd find that] power is the power of character, the power of determination and faith is the real power. And the Jews have nothing of that power. Because Allah, who created them, is the one who confirmed that to us...

"Allah is the one who says that the Jews have the character of cowards; they fear Muslims more then they fear Allah...

"The Palestinian nation is the strongest on earth. Look at all the civilizations! Look at all the states! Look at all the civilizations and forces and empires.

"Where did Great Britain disappear? Where did the Czar's Russia disappear? Where did France, that almost ruled the world, disappear? Where did Nazi Germany, which massacred millions and ruled the earth, disappear? Where did all those forces disappear? In Allah's will, He will get rid of the USA like he got rid of them. He caused Russia to disappear within a day, and He is the one Who can remove the USA and bring it down, and so He shall do it, in Allah's will...

"We [Muslims] have ruled the world [in the past] and a day will come, by Allah, and we shall rule the world [again].

"The day will come and we shall rule America. The day will come and we shall rule Britain, we shall rule the entire world, except the Jews. The Jews will not live under our rule agreeably permanently, since they have been treacherous in nature throughout history. A day will come when all shall rest from the Jews, even the tree and the stone, which have suffered from them. Listen to your Beloved [Muhammad], who tells you about the direst end of the Jews. The tree and the stone want the Muslim to bring every Jew to his end. You all know the Hadith."
[Ibrahim Mudayris, PA TV, May 13, 2005]

"The prophet said [in the Hadith], 'The resurrection will not take place until the Muslims fight the Jews, and the Muslims kill them. The Jews will hide behind the rock and tree, and the rock and tree will say, O servant of Allah, O Muslim, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him!'
[Ibrahim Mudayris, PA TV, September 10, 2004]

Rejecting Israel's Legitimacy - PA Mourns Creation of Israel
By Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook, May 15, 2005

"Do you know what happened in 1948?" asks a pretty young girl on Palestinian Authority Television (PATV). "They took everything," is her answer.

This message was broadcast today in a music video for children, and was part of the full day dedicated to mourning the creation of Israel 57 years ago, on May 14,1948. This message to children, 'Israel took everything in 1948' summarizes the essence of PA ideology, and the motivation for the continuing PA war against Israel today.

Friday"s sermon likewise reiterated the PA rejection of Israel together with the promise that Israel will be destroyed:

"This Naqba ['Catastrophe'] is the worst day of remembrance for the Palestinian people ... because with the loss of Palestine, the Arab nation was lost, and with the establishment of the false state of Israel, the whole Muslim nation was lost... He who says that the Jews have any right over this land - besides being occupiers - is a liar, and they will disappear."
[Ibrahim Mudayris, PA TV, May 13, 2005]

The climax of the day was when a siren sounded across the PA at noon, and Palestinians stood for a minute of silence to mourn Israel's existence. It is important to note that the PA mourns as the Naqba - the catastrophe - not Israel's acquiring Judea and Samaria and the Gaza Strip in 1967 - but Israel's creation in 1948.

The "Key" is Symbol of Palestinian Goals

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida,
May 14, 2005
Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May 15, 2005 Al-Quds, May 15, 2005

The denial of Israel's existence is expressed visually as well. The key has long been the symbol of the Palestinian claim to ownership of Israel and their desire to see the fulfillment of their so-called 'right of return,' shorthand for removing Israel's Jewish majority and thus effectively destroying Israel.

Palestinian newspapers - including the PA's official daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida - have, in the last few days, published numerous images of the key. In case the point was missed, today's image comes replete with a map of Israel - symbolizing ownership over all of Israel.

Examples of the key symbol being used in Palestinian Authority media over the years can be found here.

Another once-popular broadcast returned to PA TV over the weekend. This clip was shown in part on Friday, May 13 and numerous times on May 15. It claims that the "forces of oppression are still dividing the world," while showing a map of "Palestine" that erases all of Israel.

The Protocols of the Elders of Zion:
Today on PA Educational TV
December 28, 2003

Introduction and Background

Palestinian Authority Television cited again this morning the infamous forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion as an authentic document. This was part of an educational program, the objectives of which were to deny the existence of the Jewish nation and to deny Israel's right to exist.

As background, it should be noted that a foundation of Palestinian Authority (PA) ideology is that the Jews do not comprise a nation but only a religious group, and therefore do not have a right to a national home. This foundation of PA ideology is taught regularly by educators and political leaders, and was recently reiterated by the current PA Prime Minister, Ahmad Qurei:

"President Bush said that Israel is a Jewish state, which is a cause for our concern. This should not have been said ... What is the meaning of the concept of a Jewish state... Does this mean that this is a Jewish state, this is Sunni, this is Shi'ite, this is Alawite, and that one is Christian... These differences could plunge the region into a whirlpool..."
[Al-Nahar (Lebanon) and Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, June 15, 2003]

Today on PA TV, three senior historians, including the Chairman of the PA Public Library, and Arafat's Advisor on Education, Dr. Jarir Al-Kidwah, again taught this delegitimization of Israel's existence with significant elaboration and detail. Using the denial of Jewish nationhood as a starting point, they taught that modern Jews have no connection to the Land of Israel, and the early Zionists were therefore not interested in returning to Israel. Any country would have satisfied the Jews, who feared European anti-Semitism. However, it was the Europeans - Britain in particular - who directed the Jews to Israel, with two goals:/p>

1. Britain wanted to control the natural resources of the Middle East, and by planting a foreign "cancer" they could control the Arab states.
2. The Jews were such a detriment to European society that sending the Jews to the Middle East was an ideal way to "rid Europe of the burden of its problematic Jews."

As part of today's discussion, a historian explained that The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the Russian forgery that was presented as the Jews' secret plan to rule the world, played a role at the first Zionist Congress in 1897. The PA often teaches that Zionist ideology is based on The Protocols.

The following is the transcript from today's "history" program, followed by two items from PMW archives that document the repetitive nature of this de-legitimization of Israel in PA teaching:

Today's "history" program on PA TV

Dr. Riad Al-Astal, history lecturer at Al-Azhar University in Gaza:

"In these circumstances [of European nationalism] what is known as the Zionist Renaissance developed, and the seeds of what is called The Protocols of The Elders of Zion appeared at the end of the 18th century. They are the Protocols that were presented in the Basel Congress in Switzerland [the First Zionist Congress in 1897]"

Dr. Jarir Al-Kidwah [Head of the PA Public Library]:

"Theodore Herzl, the founder of political Zionism, did not believe in Judaism. He strongly opposed anyone who claimed Judaism was a religion... He believed that the Jews around the world were one nation just because they were Jews... [and] here is the danger."

Dr. Issam Sisalem [Senior Lecturer at Islamic University in Gaza and Educational TV host]:

"The Jews lived in isolated areas, in ghettos in Poland and in Russia. They were the remains of the Khazars ... with no connection to our land and the history of our land [Palestine]... and even those whomade this name name have no history or connection to this land."

[He then explains that as a result of the pogroms in Russia the Zionist wanted Jews to emigrate.]

"At that time, Britain wanted to plant a cancer [in the Middle East to control it]. It did not occur to them [the Zionists] that Palestine would be theirs. They wanted ... any Homeland. Our people wisely sensed this, as they planted on the land and lived in peace and security, continuing a twelve thousand year journey on this land. They sensed the danger, the moment the first settlement appeared. The first settlement appeared in 1842, when Moses Montefiore bought it in Jaffa under a false name, and they [the Zionists] would use French false names and others."

Moderator:

"Dr. Riad, the year 1897 is considered a crossroad ... and we regard this date as a black one in our lives..."

Al-Astal:

"... the Zionist Movement began at the Basel Congress to plan the exploitation of the powers' struggle and the struggle of Europe over the Middle East... The European states, of course welcomed this idea and were striving to plant Israel as a functional state, which will serve the imperialism, and as a bridgehead for ruling over the world, the Near East and there - from the Middle East and the Far East ... the international conspiracy was bigger than us [the Palestinian People]."

Sisalem:

"Britain wanted to plant the Jews herein order to protect the Suez Canal... Max Nordau, the deviser, the planner of the idea [of settling the Jews in Argentine, Italy, Mozambique, Angola, Al-Arish and so on] at the Basel Congress, decided that they [the Jews] will immigrate to here [to Palestine], and that is why they clothed the issue in a fictitious religious and false [manner]...

"Britain decided to plant in this land a foreign, secluded entity - a cancer - in order to drive a wedge between the [Arab] nation...

"...There are two major elements for which Britain and the other European states were striving: the first element was to get rid of the Jews, who were known as those who provoke civil wars, disturbances, and financial crises in Germany, in France and in other European states. Regarding the second point ... it is: the European plan, the British-French plan ... to torpedo any hope for an Arab unity."

Dr. Jarir Al-Kidwah

"The Europeans were afraid of Arab unity, which would have hurt their colonialism in our region, and so they decided ... to prevent Arab unity by placing a foreign body in the heart of the Arab nation, and that is the Zionist body manifested by the Jews in Palestine..."

Dr. Issam Sisalem:

"The Zionists and colonialists met in Brussels and decided to establish a cancer in the land .. They [the Jews] thought of Uganda, Cyprus, Argentina. Palestine was not a goal... But British interests caused the establishment of this cancer here... Hence the Crusader wars continue..."

"The difference between Hitler and Balfour" - Newspaper article

"The difference between Hitler and Balfour was simple: the former did not have colonies to which to send the Jews and so he destroyed them, whereas [according to] Balfour's plan ... Palestine turned into one of his colonies and he began to send the Jews there. Lord Balfour is Hitler with colonies, while Hitler is Balfour without colonies. They both wanted to get rid of the Jews... Zionism was crucial to the defense of the West's interests in the region, [by] ridding Europe of the burden of her Jews."

Comment

Even as the PA purports to embrace the peace process, it is clear that the PA leadership, including Prime Minister Ahmad Qurei, continues to refuse to recognize Israel as a legitimate state. Indeed, PA leaders and educators rely on known distortions of history to teach the Palestinian people that Israel does not have the right to exist.

The Palestinian KEY: The Symbol of PA Rejection of "Geneva" and the Rejection of Israel's Right to Exist
December 3, 2003

1. The two daggers named "Geneva" and "Roadmap" cannot weaken the fist holding the "KEY" - the symbol of "ownership" of Israel claimed by Palestinians.

[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, December 3, 2003]

Numerous world leaders continue to present the Geneva "Accord" as a breakthrough, because the Israeli participants gave up Israel's claim to its land and because the Palestinian representatives seem to have given up their demand to have millions of "refugees" settle in Israel. However, as explained in yesterday's bulletin the Palestinian Authority [PA], while accepting Israel's concessions has totally rejected any concessions on its part and continues attacks against any Palestinian who would give up what they call the "right of return" to Israel. The Mufti went so far as to issue a religious ruling prohibiting the acceptance of compensation for land claimed in Israel. [See text of Mufti below the visuals.]

One of the means of visual expression of this message is the Palestinian use of the symbol of the KEY - which to them means "ownership" - of all the land of Israel and the"houses" they claim they left there in 1948. In the last few days the KEY symbol has appeared repeatedly in PA controlled media, including these four examples [see above and below]

2. The KEY paired with the MAP of Israel - as a backdrop at an "anti-Geneva" gathering - is a common set, symbolizing the Palestinian rejection of Israel's right to exist in any borders - claiming they have the KEY or "ownership" of all Israel.

4. The masses have the ownership

The Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian lands, Sheik Ikrama Sabri

"The Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian lands, Sheik Ikrama Sabri, publicized by telegram an Islamic religious ruling, in which he emphasizes that accepting compensation for Palestinian land [land claimed within Israel] is equal to selling it and it is utterly forbidden under religious law. He said: 'To the receiver of compensation applies the religious ruling, that was given in the 1930's. This law utterly forbids the receiving of compensations because the Palestinian land is not merchandise to be sold and bought but blessed and holy Islamic land.'"

PA celebrates "Geneva Agreement"
while rejecting only Palestinian concession
December 2, 2003

The Palestinian Authority has been publicly praising the Geneva Agreement, signed yesterday between its representatives and representatives of Israel's extreme left, while clearly telling its own people that it rejects the one clause that obligates the PA to make concessions. The Palestinian Authority sees the Geneva Agreement as a major achievement, since prominent Israelis have agreed to 100% of the Palestinian territorial demands. These Israeli concessions are all clear and explicitly worded. A clear map is included with the agreement.

The only Palestinian concession - that they give up their demand to have "refugees" settle in Israel - was worded ambiguously. While the agreement validates UN Resolution 194, seen by the Palestinians as giving them the 'right' to settle in Israel, Israel would determine the final number allowed to settle, based on various undefined formulas.

The explicitness of Israel's concessions juxtaposed against the ambiguity of the Palestinian concession has enabled the Palestinian Authority to truly celebrate: Israel is obligated; they are not.

This dual message has been stated repeatedly to the PA population. Today's PA daily had no problem hailing the agreement while simultaneously rejecting the Israeli interpretation regarding refugees. The paper included two full pages of reports on all the Palestinian demonstrations against the agreement's clause to limit "the right of return," and included three explicit statements by PA leaders rejecting the idea of relinquishing "refugees' rights."

The following statements are all from today's official daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida:

"The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nabil Shaath, emphasized that the Palestinians will never give up the right to return to their houses, and will negotiate only about the procedures of returning..."
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, December 2, 2003]

"The Chairman of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Rafiq Al-Natshah, emphasized that the Palestinian problem started with the refugees and will not be solved unless the refugees return to their homes. He mentioned that the sacrifices and the struggle of our people will not allow anyone to forsake nor to concede any of our people's rights. He added: 'Anyone who imagines that our people want peace at the expense of its rights, is wrong and if the peace initiatives come at the expense of the right of our people, let all the peace initiatives go to hell...'"
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, December 2, 2003]

"The President [Arafat] blesses the conference of peace forces in Geneva..."

This was immediately followed with:

"...adhering to the legitimate international decisions which include: [UN Resolution] 194."
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, December 2, 2003]

In summary, the Palestinian interpretation of the Geneva Agreement is that Israel is obligated to hand over all the land and the refugee issue has to still be decided.

This is why the Palestinians are celebrating.
