Palestinian street named for Saddam Hussein was paved with USAID money

by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook - Jan. 22, 2007

After Saddam Hussein's execution, the Palestinian Municipality of Yaabid decided to name both a school and its main street after the Iraqi dictator. It appears that the same street was paved 18 months ago using grants from USAID.

This is not the first time that US money has gone to build Palestinian infrastructures that are named to glorify terrorists and enemies of the US. Three examples:

1. After the US gave the Jenin municipality money for road works in the city, a block in the center of Jenin was named for the first Iraqi suicide terrorist who killed four American soldiers in Fallujah. The mayor of Jenin participated in the anti-American rally and the speakers blessed the “resistance of the residents of Fallujah” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, April 4, 2004].

2. USAID funded the building of the Salaf Khalef Sports Center. Salef Khalef (Abu Iyad) the head of the Black September terror organization, was behind the killing of two US diplomats in Sudan and the 11 Israeli Olympic athletes. [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May, 30, 2004]

3. USAID funded renovations of the Dalal Mughrabi School named in honor of Dalal Mughrabi and her terror group, who killed American photographer Gail Rubin and 36 Israelis. [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, December 14, 2004]

The following is the article on the naming of Saddam Hussein Street:

“In the Yaabid Municipality… thousands of citizens held a requiem for the soul of Saddam in the mosque. Following that, a march began in the streets of the municipality, that ended at the offices of the Yaabid Municipality, where a mourners’ tent was opened in his memory. Public figures and the [Armed] Factions in Yaabid decided to name one of the schools in the municipality and its most important street after Saddam to immortalize his memory and to emphasize the values of Arabness and Jihad, which he represented…”
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, January 4, 2007]

The following is from the PMW archives on the USAID funding:

“The Yaabid Municipality in the Jenin area held a ceremony yesterday for the inauguration of a project of the paving of the main street of the municipality, funded by the United Stated Agency for International Development (USAID)… The project of paving and renovating the main entrance to the municipality and some of the inner streets is three kilometers long and cost $402,000.”

The first Saddam Hussein
Soccer Tournament for youth
in the Palestinian Authority

by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook- Jan. 11, 2007

A soccer tournament for Palestinian youth has been named after Saddam Hussein, the official newspaper of the Palestinian Authority (PA), Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, reported. The Palestinians have fervently supported Iraq and the terror against US soldiers, and in the past have honored Iraqis for killing Americans. A region of the Jenin refugee camp was named after the first suicide terrorist in Iraq who killed four American soldiers, Ali Al-Na’amani. [Al-Quds, April 2, 2003]

The PA routinely names youth sporting events after terrorists, including a soccer tournament the PA named for the Passover eve suicide terrorist who killed 31 Israelis, and summer camps for girls were named after Wafa Idris, the first woman suicide terrorist, and Ayaat al Akhras a 17 year old, the youngest girl suicide terrorist. [Al Hayat Al Jadida, Jan. 21, 2003; Al-Ayyam, July 18, 2003; Al Quds, Aug. 14, 2003]

In addition, Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement announced that a double memorial stone has been erected honoring both Saddam Hussein and Yasser Arafat. The glorification of Saddam as a Shahid [Martyr for Allah] follows years of mutual support between Saddam Hussein and Yasser Arafat.

The following are the new articles:

“The sports department in the youth community center in Tulkarm is organizing the first soccer tournament named after the Shahid [Martyr] and leader, Saddam Hussein.”
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, January 10, 2007]

“The Fatah movement in the Deheishe camp south of Bethlehem erected yesterday two memorial stones in the memory of two shahids, Yasser Arafat and Saddam Hussein. This took place during a ceremony of the movement for the commemoration of 42 years to its establishment, with the presence of the delegate of the Fatah movement, Muhammad Al-Laham… Al-Laham:'The erecting of the two memorial stones comes from a positive recognition of the immense sacrifice that the two shahids realized for the sake of their nation. Both went without renouncing their national principles.'”

Palestinian leader to Al-Qaeda:
"We hate the Americans more than you!"
"Do to Bush whatever you want and we wish you success."
[Palestinian Authority TV]

by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook- Jan. 3, 2007

A former Palestinian Authority (PA) Minister from Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah party has wished Al Qaeda success in its attacks against the US, and in its targeting of President George W. Bush. The Fatah leader, Abu Ali Shahin, said in an interview on official PA TV: "Do to Bush whatever you want, and we wish you success... We are fighting the Americans and hate the Americans more than you!"

shahin

Shahin was responding to a statement by Al-Qaeda's deputy leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, criticizing Palestinian Fatah leaders for contacts with the US.

It is noteworthy that Shahin's statement that Palestinians hate the US and wish Al-Qaeda success in terror is in line with the sentiments of the Palestinian population even before the Hamas election victory. According to a December 2005 public opinion poll, "65% of Palestinians support Al-Qaeda actions in the US and Europe." [Fafo – Institute for Applied International Studies – Norway, Survey Dec.

The following is the relevant text from the Shahin interview:

"Oh [Al-Qaeda] brother, leave us and focus on your business. You have Bush! Do to Bush what you want, and we wish you success with Bush, even more. I, Abu Ali Shahin, wish you success with Bush...

Whoever is interested in creating a split in the Palestinian camp, is not serving anyone but the Americans and their protégé, the Zionist Imperialist Project. We are fighting the Americans and hate the Americans more than you!

We know we are described as enemies of the Americans. About Americans, we say, publicly: the central, head enemy to the Arab Palestinian people and to the national struggle, is this American leadership embodied by the White House and this George Bush sitting there.”

PA TV Tribute to the ideal men -
Saddam and Arafat

"Only...because we love the men"

by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook- Jan. 2, 2007

As part of an official Palestinian Authority (PA) TV program reporting on the uniform PA condemnations of the hanging of Saddam Hussein, PA TV focused on the following giant street poster with the faces of Saddam Hussein and Yasser Arafat:

The giant text at the bottom of the poster reads: "Only ... because we love the men."

The small text on top of the poster is a quote from the Quran describing ideal men, those who fight without fear for Allah until death and others who are still waiting for death in battle:

"Of the believers are men who are true to their covenant with Allah. Some of them have paid their vow by death (in battle), and some of them still are waiting.”

Background:
Saddam Hussein and Yasser Arafat were close allies, and Iraq under Saddam was a great benefactor of the Palestinians. The Palestinian Authority was firmly behind Iraq in the war with the US, and the PA-controlled media have supported the insurgence against US soldiers. The PA hatred of the US has been expressed in regular media attacks, including calls to kill Americans. This hatred is likewise expressed graphically through political cartoons in the tightly-controlled PA press.

The PA media which is expressing identification with Saddam and hatred of the US is not Hamas media, but remains under the control of PA chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

"The Racist Natan Sharansky" says
Palestinian Institute for Study of Democracy

by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook- Dec. 26, 2006

Muwatin, the Palestinian Institute for the Study of Democracy, defined former Israeli Minister Natan Sharansky as "The Racist" in its report on the Medal of Honor Sharansky received from President George Bush. In the special Muwatin supplement, distributed with the Palestinian Authority daily Al-Ayyam, the picture of Bush placing the Medal on Sharansky appears with the following caption:

“Bush puts the Medal of Freedom on the racist Natan Sharansky.”
[Al-Ayyam, December 26, 2006]

[The news supplement, “Parliamentary Horizons”, was written by Muwatin, the Palestinian Institute for the Study of Democracy. The institute is funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), a foreign aid organization which is also a directorate under Norway’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.]

Al Jazeera - a Hamas mouthpiece
against Fatah?

by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook- Dec. 20, 2006

Introduction:

Fatah leaders have accused Al Jazeera TV of being biased in favor of Hamas, and of being subservient to the Islamic extremist movement – the Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas has been defending Al Jazeera, calling it reliable and objective. Hamas has even accused senior Fatah officials of torching three cars belonging to Al Jazeera.

Given Al Jazeera’s global image of moderation, it is noteworthy that the radical Islamist organization Hamas is defending Al Jazeera, while Fatah is attacking the network.

The following are two recent articles documenting the debate over Al Jazeera's alleged support of Hamas. The first item is from Al-Risalah, the Hamas newspaper, defending Al Jazeera. The second, attacking Al Jazeera, is from the Fatah-controlled PA daily Al Hayat Al Jadida.

Al-Risalah [Hamas], December 18, 2006:

"The satellite channel Al Jazeera from Qatar has always been thorough in conveying the suffering of the Palestinians and their message to the world in a professional and respectful manner… This has given the channel its good reputation, and the channel’s broadcasts reach every Palestinian home…

This achievement has been met by Fatah Representative, Muhammad Dahlan with an attack of incitement. He accused it [Al Jazeera] of serving Israel… and that it is subservient to the Muslim Brotherhood. Dahlan’s attack was not the only one to come from the Fatah movement, and most Fatah members 'inside' [the PA areas] attacked the channel.

Following Dahlan’s statements, the Fatah movement published a public statement in which it accuses Al Jazeera of selling its soul to the Muslim Brotherhood, and that it is biased in favor of the Hamas movement at the expense of the truth. A Fatah spokesman in the West Bank, Dr. Jamal Nazzal said: 'Al Jazeera is biased in favor of Hamas, it highlights certain elements of reality, and pushes other elements to the side.'

Al-Risalah, [the Hamas newspaper]… spoke on the phone with the director of the channel’s office in Palestine, Walid Al-Umari, who clarified that his channel is not interested in commenting on Dahlan and Fatah’s statements: '…We do not want to comment on such declarations, this is not the first time that people attack and incite against the channel.' In the past, his [Al-Umari's] car was torched and his office in Ramallah was closed.

It should be noted that the Al Jazeera office in Ramallah was torched by armed militants in June 2006, and later it turned out… that the former [Fatah] Minister of Supplies, Abu Ali Shahin was responsible for torching the office's cars. Abu Ali Shahin had accused the satellite channel Al Jazeera that it is 'Hamas-ized' and is biased in favor of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Many observers link the torching of three cars of the channel in Ramallah to the accusations of the Palestinian Authority’s former [Fatah] Minister of Supplies, Abu Ali Shahin and with the declarations of Jamal Nazzal, Fatah’s spokesman in the West Bank, who accused the channel, from Al-Doha [Qatar’s capital], of being biased in favor of Hamas.
"

Al Hayat AlJadida, [Fatah] November 4, 2006:

Headline: "Fatah accuses Al-Jazeera of being biased [in favor of Hamas] and of a lack of objectivity… The recruitment and organization office of the Fatah Movement accused the Al Jazeera channel of bias and lack of objectivity and professionalism in Palestinian issues. It is apparent to everyone … the obvious bias and the lack of objectivity… unfortunately, this shift came after Mr. Waddah Khanfar was put… in charge of directing the channel, and he is known for identifying with the Muslim Brotherhood Movement … there is a systematic media preference for the interests of one Palestinian party [Hamas] at the expense of the Palestinian public… We have turned many times to Al Jazeera reporters … and the connected structures and to others, but to no avail. To clarify, we are pointing out that the reporters of Al Jazeera are continuously exposed to threats and intimidation [lit: terror] to the point of being threatened to be fired from their job. We have confirmed reports of an agreement between [Al Jazeera head] Waddah Khanfar and the said Palestinian side [Hamas], to replace the current reporters, especially in the Gaza Strip, with people associated with them [Hamas] … We demand Al Jazeera reconsider its operational procedures … and to fix them, and to stay away from interfering with the internal Palestinian affairs in favor of one side at the expense of other sides."

PA TV:
Israel murdered babies in cold blood
during War of Independence

by Itamar Marcus and Barbara Crook- Dec. 18, 2006

Introduction:

Delegitimizing Israel's existence as a state continues to be the cornerstone of the ideology the Palestinian Authority (PA) presents to its own people in Arabic. Israel is portrayed as a state that was created through immoral actions, and which has no historical right to exist.

This week, PA TV rebroadcast a particularly hateful segment of a Palestinian Authority television series showing Israelis as child murderers. This series depicts events before and during Israel's War of Independence in 1948. In one of the many historical distortions, actors portray Israeli soldiers murdering an infant in cold blood. This hate series was previously broadcast on Palestinian Authority TV in June 2005 and July 2006.
